Reflect back on this semester.
*Have you met anyone new who is important to you? Have you rekindled any old friendships that have made you stronger?
~I met my roommate, and my friends Katie Ashley and Meg. They are easily my best friends up here. I hang out with them all the time and they are my support system. I made friendships with my best guy friends Matt, Nick, and Jordon from back home. I never realized how important they were to me until i never saw them anymore. I talk to them so much more this year than we ever used to and i am grateful for it, since they all mean so much to me. My guy friends and my best friends from up here, help me get through difficult times and are always really supportive of me and help me any way they possibly can. Making me stronger.
*Have you experienced any major changes academically or personally?
~I have personally become more focused and goal oriented. I have started working so much harder for things i want. I used to be so much lazier than i am now. I have also beaten my procrastination. I don't put of things for the last minute anymore. i was finally able to be my procrastination! Academically i have become a much better write. My papers in English have greatly improved! I am better at writing and making my topic organized and focused, and coming up with a complete and final paper that i am proud of. Academically i have also been very proud of myself for taking 18 credits, and doing fairly well grade wise even with so many credit hours. I was afraid before starting it of if i would be able to handle it, i have shown myself i can as long as i work hard.
*What is your one BEST or FAVORITE memory of this semester?
My favorite memory of this semester is when i hiked sugar loaf mountain with my roommate and her mom. For me it was just so beautiful up there that i came back down feeling like an entirely new person. I felt refreshed and revitalized and able and ready to handle anything life throws my way. It was a great feeling.
*How will you live your life to the fullest?
~I will live my life to the fullest by not regretting anything from my past. Its in the past i need to accept i can't change it and just move on, being anxious for the future. I am going to work hard the rest of my life, and not allow myself to get lazy and take the easy route through life, but the route that will challenge me to do the best i possibly can. I am also going to live life one day at a time and not focus on things i can't control.

“Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” –Stephen Covey
1) Reflect upon what you read in Chapter 11 of Thriving in College. What does this quote mean to you or how can you apply it to your life?
~To me this quote means that you can't expect to be able to undestand other people if you don't first understand yourself. Once you are able to fully understand yourself and how you act and who you associate with poeople, you will be able to understand other people. Also other people will then understand you once you know who you are. How is someone supposed to know you if you don't even know yourself. So basically know and understand yourself before trying to understand others.
2) (Refer to page 380 of the text): Are you a “Crisis Tickler,” “Withholder,” “Irritator,” “Blamer,” or “Gunnysacker?” Explain.
~I am a withholder, because when someone makes me mad i withdraw myself from them, by talking to them less or being less nice to them. I do this initally, then i talk to them about it, becuase i hate being in fights with people and its better to confront them and talk about the problem rather that just ignore them and the problem.

"Who are the people in your life that you tend to turn to for social support when you are experiencing stress or need personal encouragement?"
~In my life when i need social support or am experiencing stress I turn to many people, my mom, dad, sisters, my roomate, God, my best friends, and my grandparents. My mom, dad, and sisters are always there when i need them most. They give me advice to help me, even when i may not want to hear it. They are my biggest sources of support and advice and i can run to them with any problem, no matter how far away they are. My roomie is amazing when i have a bad day she can tell without me having to say a thing. She gives me a hug and talks to me to make everything better, i got lucky she is the best roomie ever. God means soo much to me. He always has a plan hes directing me towards. He makes me feel at peace always and can answer my problems and make me feel amazing. He is my everything i would be lost without my faith. My best friends know everything about me, yet they still love me. They give me the best advice when i need them to and are always there for me. I love them and am glad to have them in my life. My grandparents are old, but can give the best advice. They have lived the longest so they have the best advice. They love me to death and love helping me, they are amazing i love them. These people help me so much, without them i would have had difficulties getting through some tough times. I am very appreciative of them!

1) What are you most stressed-out with at the moment? Why? Is your body re-acting to this stress? Devise a plan to deal with it.
~I am most stressed about the fact that i did not get all of the classes i wanted. I am also most stressed about the fact that there are a lot of people trying to get into the radiography program, like me, and there are so few spots. Its very nerve racking the odds of actually getting into the program. So i have been stressing a lot about that, and the huge anatomy test we have. Which are always nerve racking until after we take it then i calm down but till then i am way nervous. My body is reacting by being tired, my stomachs always hurting, and i'm just like feeling the stress so i'm always worried. I plan to deal with it by taking the anatomy test, so that worry will be gone, by realizing that as long as i try my hardest, and do everything that i am supposed to , theres nothing more i can do about getting into the radiography program. I am going to deal with the stress about not getting all of my classes by talking to my advisor to see if there's a way to talk to the teacher to try and get into the class, and by checking it to see if people drop the class, and finally by checking local community colleges down home by mean to try and take that class during the summer.
2) FFN: Chapter 8 / This is a creative writing exercise! Read the following scenario and finish it based on your knowledge after reading Chapter 8. You are "Raul" and have just immigrated to the American West illegally from Mexico. You brought your wife and two young children with you on a frightening and expensive 4-day journey in the back of a beat-up truck to arrive in Texas. You can't find work there and Border Patrol is cracking down, so you decide to migrate north a bit where you have relatives in Colorado. You are hired on the spot by ConAgra to work in one of their "beef processing" plants. -Describe in sensory detail your place of employment. (What's it look like, what is going on, how do people act, what do you wear, what is your job? etc..)-How much $$$ do you earn?-How do your days go? What are your work hours and what do you do after work?-Where do you live, what do you live in, how is your quality of life?
~The place i work is full of machinary, and is a big building, there are many people here who look to be of the same ethnic background of me, they are doing there jobs quickly without seeming to think of how dangerous the job is. They are wearing normal clothes not anything different than they would in normal life and not anything that would protect them. Our job is to slice meat fast. We earn a dollar a day, which is crappy money considering how dangerous our job is. We work 12 hour shifts constantly and only cutting meat. After work i am tired so i go to bed since i have to get up early to be back to work. I live in a incredibly tiny house an hour from work that is run down and in poor shape. Our quality of life is poor since there is hardly any food or anything in our small house.

Response to Brittanys Reflection questions:
How sure do you feel about your future? Does it look good?
~I am unsure about the future. I mean the most i can do is just try my hardest in my classes right now and the rest of the years of college. It is kind of hard to be fully sure of the future. As of right now everything is going according to plan so things are looking good. I mean its like you never really can be for sure of what the future holds. You just have to be willing and open and prepared for change.
Have your career plans change now that you have a better understanding of the requirements?
~ My career plans have changed in that i plan to specifically study MRI technology rather than just readiography in general. Its not becuase i have a better understanding of the requirements but because of the fact that i want to do it as a result of my mom.

1) Post your favorite lyrics, poem, or quote for this week.
~My favorite song this weeks is by ANBERLIN and called "Inevitable" Do you remember when we were just kidsAnd cardboard boxes took us miles from what we would missSchoolyard conversations taken to heartAnd laughter took the place of everything we knew we were notI wanna break every clockThe hands of time could never move againWe could stay in this moment (stay in this moment)For the rest of our livesIs it over now hey, hey, is it over nowI wanna be your last, first kissThat you'll ever haveI wanna be your last, first kissAmazing how life turns out the way that it doesWe end up hurting the worst, the only ones we really loveI wanna break every clockThe hands of time could never move againWe could stay in this moment (stay in this moment)For the rest of our livesIs it over now hey, hey, is it over nowI wanna be your last, first kissThat you'll ever haveI wanna be your last, first kissIs it over now hey, hey, is it over nowIs it over how hey, hey, it's not over nowI wanna be your last, first kissThat you'll ever have (that you'll ever have)I wanna be your last, first love (that you'll ever have)Till you're lying here beside me with arms and eyes open wideI wanna be your last, first kiss for all time
2) Develop two reflection questions that you would ask your students at this point in the course if you were a UN100 Professor.
~What are 5 ways to beat procrastination? What are some study habits to improve your grades and help you retain information?
3) What are you passionate about? Why?
~ I am passionate about becoming a radiographer, and about helping people. Because after seing how an MRI saved my moms life by discovering a previously unknown brain tumor i love what radiography can do and i love helping people.
4) How are you going to finance your three years of the Radiology program? If you will be in debt from student loans at the end, calculate roughly how much you will owe upon graduation.
~I am going to finance my three years of the Radiology program by using the money my parents set aside that is going to pay for all of my college and also by having a steady well paying job to help pay for neccesities.
5) Have you changed your mind or do you have any new concerns about your program of study after our guest speakers today (Dr. Foley & Joanne)? Are you thinking of a different major or are you dead set on Radiology? What behavior(s) will you maybe have to change in order to keep up with and make the cut?
~I still want to do radiography, i am dead set on doing that, and will stop and nothing to become that. I am going to work harder, study more, and focus more to be able to make the cut. Also i am going to use study groups more and tutoring more to make sure that i get the best grades i can possibly get. Why not i am paying for it afterall.
6) FAST FOOD NATION (You should be reading through Chapter 7 at this point)Reflect upon the opening lines of Chapter 7:"You can smell Greeley, Colorado, long before you can see it. The smell is hard to forget but not easy to describe, a combination of live animals, manure, and dead animals being rendered into dog food."
~These opening lines give a grafic picture that puts into reality just what the smell is like for the reader. It helps the reader to paint a visible picture in their mind, and really get the point that the author is trying to get across. It might be slightly graffic, but it helps make the reader realize the gravity of the situation.
-Have you ever read The Jungle by Upton Sinclair? If so, how does it relate to FFN?
~ I have never read The Jungle by Upton Sinclair therefore i would not know how it relates to FFN.Sorry?
-How high is the employee turnover rate in the meat industry and why don't the packing plants see this as a problem?
~The turnover rate is 80%. They say its not a problem because it prevents them from forming unions and rebelling against them and also becuase like always they employees are easily replaceable.
-We discussed captive supplies of cattle versus regular farming. Reflect upon this quote from page 150:"To supply the beef slaughterhouse, ConAgra operates a pair of enormous feedlots. Each of them can hold up to one hundred thousand head of cattle..During the three months before slaughter, they eat grain..The grain fattens the cattle quickly, aided by the anabolic steroids implanted in their ear."
~As the reader you know how bad slaugterhouses are, but you realize how truly horrible they truly are by this quote. The fact that they feed them them grain just to fatten them up, the grain is not fully healthy for them, it does not supply them all they nutrients they need. So while they do fatten them up, its not true good fat.
-Do you think that these animals' emotions (fears, stress, anger) affect the meat we eat derived from them? How?
~I do because when you are stressed or angery you tend to eat less and so your body burns more. Also you tend to feel worse when you feel these emotions, and eat less.
-How do you feel about eating steroids via consumption of "USDA Inspected" beef? I probably grossed you out - sorry guys, but knowledge is power! If you still don't see the connection between this course and Fast Food Nation -- let me know. Most of you are going into health professions and will be dealing with epidemics of cancer, diabetes, heart disease etc.. mostly based on the American sedentary and processed-food lifestyle. I am hoping you are thinking more critically about everything at this point.
~I feel like all the steroids are going to catch up to us in the future. At some point its going to affect our bodies in a way like a form of cancer, or some mutation. I feel that the steroids can't be good for us, and although i eat it, i try to eat not much of them becuase i know in the long run they will be bad for us.

What do you feel this course (UN100) should focus on?
~I think this course should focus on adapting from college to high school. Many freshman have difficulty adapting to college life because they don't expect college to be any different than high school. When in reality there is much more work involved in college. I feel that although the "Fast Food Nation" is interesting, that it is not necessary. I also think the class should focus on like it has how to get involved in college. Many freshman I feel like are unsure of afraid of how to get involved in college activities and clubs.
What do you need help in, specifically? Please write at least one paragraph focusing on your specific academic needs. That's it - have a great week!
~I need help in learning how to not procrastinate over the weekends. I have gotten better at not putting everything off till Sunday night, but I could still use help. I often find myself getting caught up in the activities over the weekend, and completely lose sight of doing my homework. Then Sunday comes and I am stressed and overwhelmed with the amount of homework i have to do. So essentially i need help learning how to better manage my time on the weekend. During the week i am great at managing my time. I just always seem to find that i take full advantage of the extra time i have on the week and often loose track of how fast the time is going. I also need to learn how to go to bed earlier on the weeknights. I often seem to find myself doing things at night that i don't need to do and then next thing i know its midnight and i am tired in class the next day. So i really need to learn to watch the clock more so that i don't stay up so late on the weekdays.
